What Are Alpaca Dryer Balls?
(And Why You'll Never Go Back to Dryer Sheets)
Laundry probably isn't anyone's favorite chore.
But it's one of those little routines we repeat every week, and sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.
Our alpaca dryer balls are one of those simple swaps.
Made entirely from the fiber grown by our own alpacas here on the farm in Walla Walla, these reusable felted balls naturally soften laundry, help reduce drying time, help reduce static cling, and eliminate the need for disposable dryer sheets and liquid fabric softeners.
No chemicals.
No artificial fragrances.
No plastic.
Just naturally amazing alpaca fiber.
Why Alpaca?
Every spring our alpacas grow a brand-new fleece, and every spring we carefully shear them.
The finest fiber becomes our annual Harvest Knitwear Collection, while shorter or coarser fibers that aren't ideal for knitting are transformed into useful products like these dryer balls.
It's one of my favorite examples of using every part of the harvest instead of letting beautiful natural fiber go to waste.

How Do Dryer Balls Work?
As your dryer tumbles, the balls bounce between your clothing and towels.
This does several things at once:
Separates clothing so warm air can circulate more efficiently.
Helps bulky items like towels, comforters, blankets, and fitted sheets dry more evenly.
Softens fabrics naturally through gentle movement.
Can reduce wrinkles.
Helps reduce static, especially when laundry isn't overdried.
May shorten drying time, saving both energy and wear on your clothing.
We actually keep our dryer balls in the dryer all year long, so they're always ready for the next load.
How Many Should I Use?
I always say, the more you have the better they work, and that’s why I sell them in pairs.
For most loads, use 2 dryer balls is enough.
For large loads, towels, bedding, or comforters, use 5 or more.
The more room your laundry has to tumble, the better they'll work.
Want Fresh-Smelling Laundry?
Our dryer balls are intentionally fragrance-free, making them a great choice for those who prefer unscented laundry or have sensitivities to artificial fragrances.
If you'd like to add a natural scent, add 2–3 drops of your favorite essential oil on one dryer ball. Then place the scented dryer ball inside an old pillowcase (or mesh laundry bag) and tumble it in the dryer by itself for about 3-4 minutes. This gives the oil time to absorb into the fiber so it won't transfer directly onto your clothing.
Then, simply add the dryer ball to your load of laundry and enjoy a subtle, naturally fresh scent.
How Long Do They Last?
A very long time. I’ve never counted exactly but some of my very first dryer ball prototypes are still in use today, so that’s multiple years.
Sometimes they’ll get misshapen, sure. But the fiber doesn’t break down, so they just keep working. Very much like a well-loved and a perfectly seasoned pan.
With normal household use, a quality set of felted dryer balls can last for hundreds - often thousands - of loads before needing replacement. They simply become part of your regular laundry routine.
Caring for Your Dryer Balls
Eventually you may notice they become a little fuzzy or collect lint.
That's completely normal. If you feel like giving them a hair cut, go right for it.
And to fully freshen them up:
Place them inside a pillowcase or mesh laundry bag.
Wash on a cool or cold cycle.
Dry on low heat.
Return them to your dryer.
They're ready for many more loads.

Switching from disposable dryer sheets to reusable alpaca dryer balls means fewer single-use products heading to the landfill, fewer chemicals in your laundry room, and one less item to keep buying at the store.
